Lagos State Government would deploy cutting edge technology to mitigate risks, enforce compliance and reduce accidents on the roads, the Commissioner for Transportation Ladi Lawanson has said.
Lawanson disclosed this, Friday, at the press conference heralding the Lagos Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) Safety Campaign Week, which begins across the state today (Monday).
Among other top range technological application to be introduced by VIS are the Magneto-Optical Machine/Auto VIN for vehicle pre-registration and the commencement of the State’s Automatic Number Plate Recognition Device (ANPR), as well as the take-off of the VIS accident investigation unit (VIU).
The VIS, he further stated would also be carrying out massive awareness for e-testing of driver’s licence applicants, the importance of C-caution and Retro-Reflective Tape, verification of road worthiness certificate using short message service (SMS) via 38321 or from the VIS portal and the introduction of computerized vehicle testing, which government according to him is determined to take to across the state, with 10 new centres coming up before the end of year.
Citing the figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), which put the number of Nigerians injured in road crashes last year at 7,349, while 1,306 Nigerians got killed in road traffic crashes in quarter 4 of same year, Lawanson said the state had the lowest accident rate of 78 cases involving 531 persons.
The Commissioner said this would not have been achieved without the various strategies put in place to curb road accidents on our roads, even as he assured that the deployment of relevant technologies would further make the road safer while the vehicles would be road worthy.
“The deployment iof smart, connected sensors, combined with machine learning-powered analytics tools, would not only enable the gathering of information, predictions and decision making that will ensure safer roads, leading to drastic reduction, if not tiotal elimination of road accidents,” Lawanson said.
The State’s transportation Chief reiterated that ANPR device which introduces an optic charater recognition camera software will capture all images that are suitable for road traffic thereby making possible the enforcement of relevant provisions of the road traffic law.
“The device predict vehicle journey times over a given section of road, measure vehicle speed and determines the average speed of vehicles travelling by identifying their registration plate at both ends of a given journey,” he added, saying the system which would be synchronised with the data base platform of FRSC LASDRI and other relevant agencies to generate driver’s details for which a bill could be generated and dispatched by the Central Billing System (CBS).
Lawanson said the acquisition of AutoVIN machine by the VIS would boost pre-registration inspection activities of VIS which not only validates vehicle’s originality in terms of make, model and year of manufacture even after being falsified, thereby discouraging the importation of stolen or defective vehicles into the country or state, and enhances security and auto-accident investigation exercise by the unit that has been created in line with the responsibilities of the VIS.
In his welcome address the state’s VIS Director Dr Hafiz Toriola said the VIS would take the road safety campaign week to churches, mosques, motorparks and garages of fleet operators to drum awareness of all stakeholders in the sector to the need to embrace safety and to help ensure the state’s roads are kept safe all year round.
Toriola said the campaign which takes place twice a year has helped draw attention of all stakeholders and VIS partners to all issues that could promote safety and ensure that deaths are reduced to the barest.
The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Dr Olufemi Taiwo Salaam urged Lagosians as stakeholders to cooperate with the VIS in making the roads safer for all users.
He praised the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his investment in the sector and especially in deploying technology to improve the state’s road accident profile.
