A new helmsman has been appointed for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The new Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, a Professor of Political History and International Studies would be taking over from the Acting Chairman Hajia Amina Bala Zakari, who was appointed on July 1, 2015 to replace Professor Attahiru Jega. Yakubu, a former Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund was also the Assistant Secretary in charge of Finance and Administration during the 2014 National Conference. Yakubu’s appointment was approved by the Council of State, which met in Abuja on Wednesday. The Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, disclosed the appointment of the new INEC chairman and other principal officers of the electoral body to newsmen after the Council of State meeting. Tambuwal said the appointment of Yakubu was in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and done in consultation with the Council of State by Buhari. The Acting Chairman, Amina Zakari, the governor said, now becomes the INEC Commissioner representing the North West.
